How an NPFL season is built

Twenty clubs. Two meetings each, home and away. That's 38 matchdays for everybody, running from late August through to the end of May. The fixture draw is made at the league's general meeting before the season, but don't treat the printed version as final. Rounds get shifted for CAF club games, Super Eagles windows, and now and then a ground that isn't ready.

At the bottom, four clubs drop into the Nigeria National League at the end of the season, and four come up the other way. That's why the last few weeks get tense even for sides sitting in mid-table: two bad results in April can drag a club into the scrap. Up top, the leading clubs earn Nigeria's places in the CAF club competitions for the following season.

The clubs with the loudest following

The 20 names change a little every year, so the table above is the truth for this season. Still, ask anyone from Aba to Kano and these are the clubs they'll bring up first:

  • Enyimba, the People's Elephant, at the Enyimba International Stadium in Aba. Two CAF Champions League titles, 2003 and 2004, and nobody in Nigeria has matched that.
  • Rangers International of Enugu, the Flying Antelopes, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium. Their supporters travel, and they let you know about it.
  • Kano Pillars, Sai Masu Gida, whose home crowd at the Sani Abacha Stadium is famous for how hard it makes life for visitors.
  • Shooting Stars, the Oluyole Warriors, playing at Lekan Salami Stadium in Adamasingba, Ibadan.
  • Rivers United from Port Harcourt, a regular on the continent in recent seasons.

Home advantage in this league is real. Long road trips, hot afternoons and pitches that vary a lot from city to city all play a part, so away wins tend to get talked about for days.

Reading kick-off times in WAT

Nigeria stays on West Africa Time (UTC+1) all year, with no clock change. Every NPFL game is played inside the country, so the time you see in the list is simply the time on the stadium clock. Nothing to convert.

It gets trickier if you follow from abroad. Our brother in London is one hour behind Lagos from late October to late March, then level with us once the UK moves to summer time. Someone in Houston sits seven hours behind in winter and six in summer. If you share the list with family overseas, tell them it's WAT so nobody shows up an hour late to a group call about a Kano derby.

Getting the most from this page

  1. The fixture block always looks ten days ahead from today. Come back on Monday and it has already rolled forward.
  2. Games from the last three days stay in the list with their final score, so you can check a result you missed.
  3. If a match shows no time yet, the league hasn't confirmed it. Check again closer to the weekend.
  4. Bookmark the page instead of saving screenshots. A screenshot from Tuesday can be wrong by Friday.

NPFL games on the Gamting sportsbook

When an NPFL round is open for betting, you'll find it in the football section of the sportsbook, under Nigeria. Your balance and your stakes are in naira. You top up with USDT on TRON (TRC20) or USDC on Polygon and the amount lands as ₦. New players get a ₦1,400 welcome bonus, added automatically with the first deposit, no code needed. 18+, T&Cs apply, and the current offers sit on the Nigeria promotions page. Our football betting guide for Nigeria explains the common markets.

Keep it fun. Set a weekly figure you're happy to lose and stop there, even when your club is on a run. The responsible gambling page lists the tools on your account.

Common Questions

Why did an NPFL match disappear from the fixture list?

Usually because it was moved. The league reschedules games when a club has a CAF trip, when the Super Eagles are in camp, or when a venue isn't approved in time. Once a new date is set, the game comes back into the list on that day. If the date is more than ten days away, you'll see it when the window reaches it.

How many teams go down from the NPFL each season?

Four. The clubs finishing 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th are relegated to the Nigeria National League, and four clubs come up from that division to replace them. With that many places at stake, teams in the bottom half often play cautious football late in the season, and every point matters right up to the final round.

Are the times on this page Nigerian time?

Yes, every kick-off is shown in WAT, the same time your phone shows in Lagos, Abuja or Kano. Nigeria doesn't change its clocks during the year, so there's no summer or winter adjustment to worry about. If you're reading from another country, convert from UTC+1 to your own local time.

How often does the NPFL table update?

It refreshes from our live scores feed, so a finished game is counted shortly after the final whistle. Points, goal difference and positions all change together. If a result is later changed by the league, for example after a protest or an abandoned game, the table follows once the official result is entered in the feed.

Can I bet on NPFL matches in naira?

Yes. When an NPFL round is open on the Gamting sportsbook, your stake comes from your naira balance and any return is credited in naira too. You fund the account with USDT on TRC20 or USDC on Polygon, and the amount is converted to naira when it arrives. You must be 18 or older to open an account.
