Sports betting in Nigeria, explained from the odds up
Sports betting in Nigeria on Gamting happens in one place, the sportsbook, with a single naira balance behind every stake. Football gets most of the attention, but you can also bet on basketball, boxing, tennis and plenty more. This guide is about the mechanics underneath all of them: what the odds are telling you, how a slip turns into a settled bet, and how to size your stakes so a bad week doesn't hurt. 18+ only.
What decimal odds actually mean
Gamting shows odds as decimals, the format most Nigerians already know from betting shops and apps. The number is what you get back for every ₦1 staked, stake included.
- Odds of 2.00 on a ₦1,000 bet return ₦2,000: your ₦1,000 back plus ₦1,000 profit.
- Odds of 1.25 return ₦1,250, so only ₦250 is profit.
- Odds of 6.50 return ₦6,500 on the same stake.
Turning odds into a chance
Divide 1 by the odds and you get the chance the price implies. 1 divided by 2.00 is 0.50, an implied chance of one in two. At 1.25 it's 0.80, four in five, and at 6.50 it's about 0.15, roughly one in seven. Do this for every outcome in a match and the figures add up to a little more than 1. That extra is the bookmaker's margin, and it's built into every price you'll ever see anywhere.
Why bother? Because it helps you ask the right question. Not "will this team win?" but "is this team more likely to win than the price says?" If you can't say yes with a reason, the bet is only entertainment, and the stake should be sized like it.
Beyond football: what else Nigerians bet on
Basketball
NBA games from the US East Coast usually start somewhere between midnight and 2am WAT, depending on the time of year and the start slot, so most NBA betting happens before bed or on the replay of the night. Markets cover the winner (no draw once overtime is included), points handicaps and total points. D'Tigress, our women's national team, have won AfroBasket more than once and reached the Olympic quarter-finals in Paris in 2024. When they play, look for their games in the basketball section.
Boxing
Big fight nights draw a Nigerian audience, not least when a boxer with Nigerian roots is on the card. Boxing markets usually include the winner, the method of victory (stoppage or decision) and the round a fight ends in. Check whether a draw is a separate outcome on the fight you pick, as it changes how the bet settles.
Tennis
Tennis runs almost all year, with the four Grand Slams as the headline events. Bets are usually on match winner, set handicap or total games. A rule worth knowing: if a player retires injured, how the bet settles depends on the sportsbook's tennis rules and how far the match got. Read them once.
Building a slip, one tap at a time
- Open an event and tap a price. It drops into your bet slip.
- Add more selections if you want an accumulator, or keep it to one for a single.
- Type your stake in naira. The slip shows the potential return straight away.
- Check each line: right match, right market, right side. "Over 2.5" and "Under 2.5" look alike when you're squinting at a phone.
- Confirm. If any price moved in the meantime, you'll be asked to accept the new one or cancel.
- Find the bet under your open bets, where it stays until it settles.
How bets settle
Most markets settle on the result at the end of regular time. For football that means 90 plus stoppage time, not extra time or penalties, unless the market says otherwise, like "to qualify" or "to lift the trophy". Basketball totals and winner markets normally include overtime. A void selection, for example a match that never gets played, is usually treated as odds of 1.00, so an accumulator carries on with the remaining legs at a smaller return. The sportsbook's own rules always decide, so if you're unsure on a specific bet, check them or raise a support ticket.
Staking like someone who wants to bet next month too
A simple method many careful bettors use is units. Decide your betting money for the month, say ₦20,000, and make one unit a hundredth or two of that pot. That's ₦200 to ₦400 a bet. Most bets are one unit. A bet you've thought hard about might be two. Nothing is ever ten.
Units keep a losing streak from becoming a crisis. Five losses in a row at ₦300 cost ₦1,500, which stings but leaves you plenty for the rest of the month. Five losses at ₦5,000 would end it.
Write your bets down, even in your phone's notes app. After a month you'll see which sports and markets you're actually good at reading and which ones only feel exciting.
Bonuses for sportsbook players
New accounts get ₦1,400 as a welcome bonus with the first deposit, credited automatically together with a first-deposit bonus. No code. Each day, a deposit made during Happy Hours, which run in local time, can come with up to 5% extra. Optional Telegram bonus codes go out hourly to a limited number of claimers; make the deposit first, then paste the code into the bonus code box on your account dashboard within 15 minutes.
