When Is the IPL 2027 Retention Date? Deadline, Rules and Team Tracker
The IPL 2027 retention date is Sunday 15 November 2026. All ten franchises must hand their retained and released lists to the IPL by then, a month before the mini-auction at ITC Grand Goa on Wednesday 16 December. The deadline comes from the IPL's note to franchises as reported by CricTracker and Outlook India. As of 2 November we haven't seen a public BCCI release. There's no published closing time either.
When is the IPL 2027 retention date, and what follows it?
Three dates matter between now and the auction. We've marked how firm each one is, since a media report isn't the same as an official notice.
| Date | What happens | Status |
|---|---|---|
| 15 Nov 2026 | Retention lists due | Reported |
| After 15 Nov | Registered list sent to teams | Reported |
| 9 Dec 2026 | Trade window closes | Reported |
| About 9 Dec | Final list and sets | Reported |
| 16 Dec 2026 | Auction, ITC Grand Goa | Confirmed |
| Late March 2027 | Season start | TBC |
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia has confirmed the auction date and venue. He also said in September that the 2027 season could start towards the end of March, against the 14 March to 30 May window pencilled in back in 2024. There's no schedule yet. If you see an exact IPL 2027 start date, treat it as a guess. The auction falls on the same day as the second India v Sri Lanka ODI in Bengaluru.
What time will the IPL 2027 retention list come out?
Nobody has announced a time. Last year is your best guide: the deadline was also 15 November, the window was expected to close around 5:00 PM IST, and full lists were being published by about 7:00 PM IST that evening. You can expect something similar on Sunday 15 November.
How many players can a team retain for IPL 2027?
There is no fixed retention limit before a mini-auction, unlike the six-player rule used for the 2025 mega auction. A team can keep as many players as it likes as long as the squad stays within the composition rules. Last year those rules were a minimum of 18 players, a maximum of 25, and up to eight overseas players. Right to Match cards were not available at the 2026 mini-auction. We haven't seen a 2027 notice changing any of this. So these are the 2026 rules until the IPL says otherwise.
How much money will each team have at the auction?
The one fixed number comes from the IPL's own 2025-27 regulations: a total salary cap of Rs 157 crore for 2027, up from Rs 151 crore in 2026. That cap covers the auction purse, performance pay and match fees together. It isn't the auction purse. The 2026 purse was Rs 125 crore. We couldn't find a published 2027 purse, so we're leaving it as TBC.
Here's how the sums work, using last year's real figures. Kolkata Knight Riders went in with Rs 64.30 crore left. Against the Rs 125 crore purse, that means their kept squad cost Rs 60.70 crore. Mumbai Indians kept far more value: Rs 2.75 crore left means Rs 122.25 crore tied up in the squad, with five places still to fill. Releasing a player puts his fee straight back into the purse. That's why 15 November decides who can actually spend on 16 December.
Which IPL 2027 trades are already done?
Two deals had been made when the deadline was reported, involving four players. Delhi Capitals are in both of them. The window stays open until 9 December, so more can follow. Other names you'll see linked with moves are rumours until the IPL confirms them.
| Player | From | To | Announced |

| Kuldeep Yadav | DC | LSG | June 2026 |

IPL 2027 retention tracker: where does each team stand?
This is our team-by-team view. The first two number columns show where each side stood after last year's retentions, so you can compare once the new lists land. We'll fill the last column with real numbers after the deadline. Royal Challengers Bengaluru go in as back-to-back champions after beating Gujarat Titans in the 2026 final.

Across the league, last year's lists left 77 open places, 31 of them for overseas players, with 173 players already on the books. Those totals are the yardstick for this year. You can see the current sides on our IPL teams page and how they finished on the IPL points table.
Why does this auction matter more than a normal mini-auction?
It's the last mini-auction of the current cycle, with a mega auction planned before the 2028 season. It's also the first to be held in India after three editions overseas in Dubai, Saudi Arabia and Abu Dhabi. If you followed the women's auction last week, our WPL 2027 auction guide explains purse and slot arithmetic the same way, and India's men are in New Zealand right now: see the India in New Zealand schedule.
